Updated: Apr 19, 2023

Ma·son /ˈmās(ə)n/ noun noun: mason; plural noun: masons; noun: Mason; plural noun: Masons 1. a builder and worker in stone. 2. a Freemason. verb verb: mason; 3rd person present: masons; past tense: masoned; past participle: masoned; gerund or present participle: masoning

1. build from or strengthen with stone.

  • cut, hew, or dress (stone).

That's not a surprising question. Even though Masons are members of the largest and oldest fraternity in the world, and even though almost everyone has a father or grandfather or uncle who was a Mason, many people aren't quite certain just who Masons are. A Mason (or Freemason) is a member of a fraternity known as Masonry (or Freemasonry). A fraternity is a group of men (just as a sorority is a group of women) who join together because: There are things they want to do in the world. Things they want to do in their communities. They enjoy being in the company of men with like minds who they respect and like. Masonry is the oldest fraternity in the world. No one knows just how old though masons are mentioned in the Bible. Masonry is a philanthropic institution which reveres charity. It gives you the philosophy that can help you understand and explore morality, endless opportunities for sharpening your own skills with a collection of fellows on whom to practice your efforts at relief, charity, friendship, brotherly love, and practical leadership.
